To create this serene residence in midtown Manhattan, two adjoining apartments were combined and given a full gut renovation that maximized space and natural light. The essential design objective was to endow a typical apartment layout with a loft-like quality of openness, with a secondary goal of reflecting the clients’ preference for Asian art and antiques.
A spacious living, dining, and entry area was centered around the core of the residence, with the kitchen, family room, office, and three bedrooms opening up into it from all sides. Customized millwork, doors and window frames were carried to the ceiling to exaggerate the rooms’ height and create consistent, clean planes on every wall. Finally, a muted color palette throughout the apartment guarantees a visual cleanliness that appears to further open up the space.
Vibrant fabrics in spicy red-orange hues accent the neutral walls, grey-toned cabinetry, and dark wood floors. Natural fabrics were favored, including silks, linens, wools, and sateen that cast a soft gloss over the entire residence. The furniture mixes new and vintage mid-century modern pieces, with sharp lines and solid tones that play off the Asian elements.
