Located on a serene, heavily wooded lot, this classic modernist bungalow serves as a weekend retreat for a busy Manhattan-based couple. The aim was to integrate the indoor with the outdoor and provide a comfortable respite perfect for all seasons.
The existing simple structure worked well with the desire for an intelligently designed yet unpretentious environment. The exterior was given a modest facelift; a pool and large expanse of mahogany decking were added to complement the existing vertical cedar siding of the house, also stained a soft grey. The landscaping was subtly manipulated to complement the home and the local vegetation in a cohesive fashion.
The interior was completely renovated to make the most of the natural light and attractive surroundings. The open living and dining areas provide a comfortable setting for entertaining, while the informal ambiance allows for relaxation after a busy workweek.
The home features a balance of warm versus cool: turn-of-the-century antiques and rich woods are contrasted with stainless steel, industrial-age features and shots of color composed in a seemingly offhand manner. A mix of vintage and custom furnishings, including the antique hospital beds, Christian Dell lamps and vintage classroom chairs, were also carefully selected to enhance the scheme.
The result is an approachable setting that weaves the best of modern and country in a casual-chic manner.
