Reserve Bar New York
Nestled in the iconic Morgan’s Hotel, this chic lounge is a destination gathering space.
The smartly tailored design pays homage to Andrée Putman’s original aesthetic while forging a unique new direction for the hotel. The innovative use of strong sculptural forms, reflective surfaces, and sophisticated lighting announces a heightened level of luxury and richness.
The lounge proper is accessed via a long processional corridor lined with wire mesh backlit glass. This gauze-like material, at once crystalline and ephemeral, adds a theatrical touch and sets the tone for what comes. Opening to a double height volume, Reserve Bar is light and spacious, and appointed with comfortable furnishings and seductive materials. A large portion of the former mezzanine was removed to further expand the room’s volume, while the remaining portion houses intimate alcoves.
Flanking the end wall, a dramatic three-dimensional installation of faceted mirror- polished metal adds luminescent sparkle and plays against the metallized plank wood- paneled walls and smoky-colored palette.
The main level is a living room-like setting with an oversize area rug and long sumptuous banquettes, sofas, and chairs upholstered in a mix of textures and a palette of cool blues and warm grays. Rift-cut oak paneling and streamlined furniture counterbalance sparkling glass wall panels and a smoky bronze glass banister. Two gleaming sunburst chandeliers hover over the scene adding further shimmer. The palette deepens on the mezzanine level, with darker blues and purples, while small tables provide for light dining and cocktails.
In the evening, Reserve Bar projects a decisively dramatic mood; the hints of sheen and shimmer, subtle during the day, take center stage. The mirror-backed glass bar and faceted backdrop creates a prismatic interplay of shadow and light, while flickering flames from a crisply detailed fireplace reflects off the antique bronze hearth and bronze- clad columns. LED lighting in the wire mesh glass panels and glass banister create a running glow across the room. Finally, up-lighting on the mezzanine casts soft glow behind sofas, large tufted seating, and intimate seating areas.
Using rich furnishings along with carefully calibrated lighting elements and gleaming finishes, the design strikes a perfect balance of glamour and comfort.
