With a sense of history and place, this large dwelling was transformed into the quintessential Soho loft for a modern, active family. The dwelling combines sumptuous materials, durable fabrics, and a neutral color palette to create a relaxed, yet elegant, enclave suitable for both relaxed family living and sophisticated entertaining.
This sculptural panel of alternating metal plates, salvaged from the exterior of a former building, adds architectural interest and functions as a floating partition between the more “formal” living area, and a playroom-study; work and play are subtly separated.
Along one side, a paneled wall acts as a “smart” wall: behind what looks like fixed decorative millwork, is a two foot deep zone of highly usable storage, cleverly combining both form and function. Large ceruse oak doors glide easily from suspended barn door track to reveal massive amounts of toys, books and art supplies. By day, it is an activity filled children’s area, easily hidden for tranquil evenings of entertainment of family and friends.
Sheathed in large, unbroken counters of Calacatta marble, light oak cabinetry, schoolhouse polished nickel pulls and stainless steel accents, the Kitchen adds a warm note to the chic-causal style reflected throughout the residence.
Linking the kitchen to the dining area is a cleverly arranged series of customized wine coolers, replete with blackened-steel doors that highlight the clients’ important collection. To complete the industrial feel, a vintage-inspired antiqued nickel chandelier with exposed wiring illuminates a cast iron and textured oak dining table.
A third bedroom carved out of recaptured space, uses traditional factory windows of blackened steel and ribbed glass to provide much needed natural light and architectural interest.
Finally, unique pendant fixtures, lined with tinted blue glass, underscore the approach; the soft glow is calm, yet sophisticated.
